Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor, used to treat gastric acid-related disorders.

    Treatment of Duodenal Ulcers

    20 mg Once daily

    2 weeks. Some patients may require an additional 2 weeks

    Prevention of relapse of duodenal ulcers

    20 mg Once daily

    As directed by physician

    Treatment of Gastric ulcers

    20mg Once daily

    4 weeks. If not healed further 4 weeks.

    Prevention of relapse of Gastric ulcers

    20 mg Once daily or 40mg Once daily

    As directed by physician

    H. pylori Eradication in Peptic Ulcer Disease

    Omeprazole 20 mg BID

    Amoxicillin 1000 mg BID

    Clarithromycin 500 mg BID

    1 week

    If the patient is still H. pylori positive, therapy may be repeated

    Omeprazole 20 mg BID

    Clarithromycin 250 or 500 mg BID

    Metronidazole 400 mg BID

    1 week

    If the patient is still H. pylori positive, therapy may be repeated.

    Omeprazole 40mg OD

    Amoxicillin 500 mg TID

    Metronidazole 400mg TID

    1 week

    If the patient is still H. pylori positive, therapy may be repeated.

    Treatment of NSAID-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers

    20 mg Once daily

    As directed by physician

    Prevention of NSAID-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers in patients at risk

    20 mg Once daily

    As directed by physician

    Treatment of reflux oesophagitis

    Severe oesophagitis

    20 mg-40mg Once daily

    4 to 8 weeks

    Long-term management of patients with healed reflux oesophagitis

    20-40 mg once daily

    As directed by physician

    Treatment of symptomatic gastro-oesophageal reflux disease

    20 mg once daily

    As directed by physician

    Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome

    60 mg once daily

    As long as clinically indicated.

     

    Paediatric Patients

    Children over 1 year of age and ≥ 10 kg

    Treatment of reflux oesophagitis

    ≥ 1 year of age 10-20kg weight

    Omeprazole 10mg OD. Can be increased to 20mg OD if needed

    4 to 8 weeks

    ≥ 2 years of age > 20kg

     Omeprazole 10mg OD. Can be increased to 20mg OD if needed

    Symptomatic treatment of heartburn and acid regurgitation in GERD: 

    ≥ 1 year of age 10-20kg weight

    Omeprazole 10mg OD. Can be increased to 20mg OD if needed

    2 to 4 weeks If symptom control has not been achieved the patient should be investigated further.

    ≥ 2 years of age > 20kg

     Omeprazole 10mg OD. Can be increased to 20mg OD if needed

    Children and adolescents over 4 years of age

    Treatment of duodenal ulcer caused by H. pylori

    15-30kg

    Omeprazole 10mg BID + Amoxicillin 25mg/kg body weight BID + clarithromycin 7.5mg/kg body weight BID

    1 week

    31-40kg

    Omeprazole 20mg BID + Amoxicillin 250mg BID + clarithromycin 7.5mg/kg body weight BID

    >40kg

    Omeprazole 20mg BID + Amoxicillin 1000mg BID + clarithromycin 500mg BID

     

    • Hypersensitivity to omeprazole, substituted benzimidazoles or to any of the excipients.
    • Omeprazole like other proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) must not be used concomitantly with nelfinavir.
